The New National Assembly Building

April 10, 2026

This green building was meticulously designed to serve as the Parliament of The Gambia, situated in West Africa. Its purpose was not only functional but also symbolic, aiming to create an iconic structure. The architectural concept revolves around the representation of significant elements. The curved roof design mirrors the graceful flow of the river Gambia, while the Golden CONE, housing the assembly hall, symbolizes the orange flame of hope depicted in the country’s flag. The Green embankments surrounding the building represent the vital role of agriculture in sustaining the nation’s riverine landscape.

The design prioritizes natural ventilation to create cool and comfortable spaces throughout the building, including public areas. It also incorporates features to maximize the entry of indirect light, such as skylights and internal courts, enhancing the ambiance while reducing the need for artificial lighting. Additionally, innovative perforated shading screens are utilized in the assembly hall to optimize daylight while managing solar heat gain.

Despite being a relatively small project for a country of modest size, it presents a significant challenge in terms of creating an iconic and signature building. The sweeping curve, environmental sky frame roof, and incorporation of sustainable and green design strategies exemplify the commitment to both aesthetics and environmentally friendly practices. This project showcases the fusion of architectural excellence, cultural symbolism, and sustainable design principles in creating a remarkable landmark for The Gambia.
